"Passing Strange" for all!

As you may recall, I was blown away by Stew's Broadway show, Passing Strange - here's my May 2008 post, with links. The show is really about an artist's attempts (not always successful) to come of age - and if you come from any family, culture or ethnic group where "our kind" doesn't do "that stuff" (whatever "us" and "that" may be), it resonates. I loved it so much I took Terri Windling & her fiancee when they were here, and she'd been hoping to take her step-daughter when she came for the wedding - but it had closed. Desolation!

But wait! Spike Lee has filmed Passing Strange. It's at Sundance right now, and, with any luck, will be at a theatre (or channel) near you for all to enjoy and be inspired by. Loud, loud cheers.

What great news! I've been a fan of Stew's for years and was very disappointed that his show closed before I could see it. Now I may have a chance.

Makes me think of My Name Is Asher Lev (Have you read that, and if so what did you think of it?).

I first read it in high school, shortly after a friend of mine, Lisa, had to read it in English class. In fact, her teacher asked if she thought I'd be willing to come in one day and talk to them about my bar mitzvah. Lisa broke up laughing, and it took a minute or so before she could croak out, "But he's Baptist!
