Happily installed in Devon

Yesterday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., I traveled by plane (to Heathrow), bus (to Reading), train (to Exeter), taxi (to Avis @ Exeter airport, all others being closed on a Saturday afternoon)  & rental car to Terri's little village on the moors.  I was Troop Leader for our little expedition, which included [livejournal.com profile] deliasherman , Holly Black & her husband Theo - doughty travelers, all!  And each possessed of particular skills useful on such a journey.  Theo got us all into wireless last night.  Holly found the signs for everything from bus stops to rhubarb yoghurt (whyyy don't we have rhubarb yoghurt in the US??).  Delia is cooking dinner right now (in someone else's kitchen. With a UK oven).  We've been talking about Life & Writing ever since we had our naps yesterday.  And drinking all the Pear Cider we can find (and also much tea).

Went for a long walk on the Common today with Terri & Tillie.  There were wild moor ponies, and I made my way across the heath & the remaining bluebells to them, and sat quietly in the sun until a very young colt came sniffing up to me, snuffled in my hair & butted me with its nose (to find out if I gave milk, I guess.  I do not).   Another life dream achieved.

The rest of the day off, and tomorrow the real work begins:  We go over the copyedited BORDERTOWN ms., and then brainstorm our stories and the line edits that will give the new book that Windling magic . . . . .

Jay - I would actually like that very much -but it depends on how the work goes; we Absolutly Must get through these edits in the time alotted, before we go! We should know in a couple of days, once the rhythm settles. Why don't you write me at the edress listed in my profile, and we can scheme? (And if it doesn't work out this time, I can assure you I'll be back - we just love visiting Terri & our other friends here!)

And drinking all the Pear Cider we can find

Hmmph! "Pear cider" is an oxymoron. The proper name is perry. And you should be able to find some of the real thing, down in Devon...

*grumps*

[identity profile] deliasherman.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what it said on the bottle. Also on the lever in the pub, where they had it on tap. I'm with you, though. I keep thinking "pear cider? Do they mean perry? Then why not say perry?"

But life is like that sometimes.

[identity profile] desperance.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
'Zackly. "Pear cider" is a nasty new marketing term, to help 'em sell it to the young people of today, who don't understand what perry is. Or ought to be. (A lot of "pear cider" is made with commercial pear juice, rather than proper perry pears.) And the trouble, of course, is that it works: sales have skyrocketed, these last couple of years.

On the other hand, I was at the Cambridge beer festival last week, and I've never seen so many real perries in one place. It ain't all bad news, I guess. Grudgingly.

I declare--young folks today! In my day, we knew what good drink was and called it by its proper name.

[identity profile] desperance.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! And didn't listen to that awful music while we drank it, either...

*lurker steps out*

Heh. I remember original Babycham!

*goes back to lurking*

Excellent use of the Lurk Direct!

But - original Babycham, you say? Is this to say that they've changed it...?

[identity profile] fatfred.livejournal.com 2010-06-07 11:58 am (UTC)(link)

Changed... in a way. It was very hard to find for a while, major reintroduction in '96.
I've never been able to get it in The States.
Sigh.

(I'm really glad you're having such a good time, by the way.)
