coffeeandink wrote up bits of our panel on Feminism & YA. I'm sure there are many more I know not of.
And now, photos:
Oddly enough, Delia appeared in the January 1919 edition of Vogue. A Timeless Classic, indeed.
And here am I, dancing at the Ratbastards' glorious Karaoke party to my favorite song (thanks,
gwendabond!
Have you looked at these Morphing Painted Ladies yet?
Oops - and I forgot to announce that TPOTS was formally honored - and I do mean honored! - by inclusion on this year's TIPTREE HONOR LIST. The 2006 Tiptree Award has been won by Shelley Jackson for "Half Life"
(HarperCollins) and Catherynne M. Valente for "The Orphan's Tales: In the
Night Garden" (Bantam Spectra).
The awards will be presented on May 27, 2007 at WisCon in Madison, Wisconsin.
Jackson and Valente will each receive $1000 in prize money, an original
artwork created specifically for the award, and the signature chocolate that
always accompanies the Tiptree Award.
The James Tiptree Jr. Award was created in 1991 to honor Alice Sheldon, who
wrote under the pseudonym James Tiptree, Jr. The juried Award is presented
annually to a work or works that explore and expand gender roles in science
fiction and fantasy.
The James Tiptree, Jr. Literary Award Council also suggests the following
reading list of works from 2006:
Andrea Hairston, "Mindscape" (Aqueduct Press); Betsy James, "Listening
at the Gate" (Atheneum); Ellen Kushner, "The Privilege of the Sword"
(Spectra); James Morrow, "The Last Witchfinder" (Morrow); Karen
Traviss, "Matriarch" (Eos); Mark von Schlegell, "Venusia" (Semiotext(e))
Michaela Roessner, "Horse-Year Women" (Fantasy and Science Fiction,
January 2006); Karen Russell, "Ava Wrestles the Alligator" (Granta 93, April
2006; St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves (Knopf)); Karen Russell, "St.
Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" (Zoetrope: All-Story, Summer 2006; St.
Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves (Knopf))
I was delighted to find that the jury has posted their comments on all the Honor Books, including mine. Good stuff. You should read them all, and make sure your local library carries them. If you ask, the Tiptree committee will send you stickers to put on the winners and the Honor Books (librarians, take note!).
