BOSTON, Mass. - June 15, 2007 (Radio Story) - Gay marriage is here to stay in Massachusetts, at least for the foreseeable future. By a margin of 151 to 45, lawmakers decided yesterday against sending a proposed ban to a statewide referendum next year.
The vote capped weeks of lobbying at the state house, with Governor Deval Patrick among those leading the charge against the amendment. Meanwhile, opponents of same sex marriage are promising to press on but they're not yet specifying any further actions.

Boston Globe "web exclusive" Opinion Piece by Derrick Z. Jackson (6/14/07):

LET THE wedding bells ring 151 times for gay couples and a courageous commonwealth.

Not only did the Massachusetts Legislature vote 151-45 today to block a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, the 45 votes for the ban represented a resounding drop from the 62 votes for the amendment last session. The measure needed at least 50 of 200 votes in consecutive sessions to make it to the ballot.

That was a dramatic testament to the fact that legislators concluded that neither the so-called sanctity of matrimony nor the moral fiber of the commonwealth crumbled in the three years of gay marriage. ....

CATHOLIC SUPPORT
from a "high profile lay advisor to Boston Archbishop Cardinal O'Malley. The advisor, Peter Meade...who resigned over the Archdiocese's decision to ban same-sex couples from adopting . . . " His editorial, written earlier this week in the tabloid Boston Herald.:

"...legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts is a logical continuation of the social evolution that winds its way slowly yet inexorably throughout our nation’s history. . . . . Across the street from the State House stands the monument commemorating the heroics of the Massachusetts 54th, the black regiment that fought with such distinction in the Civil War. The plaque is inscribed with the names of the men who died “in the cause of freedom and union.” Freedom and union. Are there any two words that more aptly apply to the marriage issue today?"

AP Wire: Gay marriage Backers want to open Mass. to out -of-state backers:

Fresh off the success of defending gay marriage from its latest attack, advocates say they have one more fight in Massachusetts: Repealing a 1913 law that bars same-sex couples in most other states from coming here to get married. .... Opponents of gay marriage, including the former governor and now Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have said repealing the law would make Massachusetts the "Las Vegas of gay marriage."

Only instead of Elvis Chapels we'll have Michelangelo & Natalie Barney.

Yeah, Mitt, all the money Mass. would rake in from that would be a crying shame. Seriously, you'd think simple business greed would make this one an easy decision.

All I can say is that I will love the good state of Massachusetts for all time. Its motto should be "Still The Center of the Rebellion, Biotches."

My mind both boggles and capers at the thought of chapels done in the style of either Natalie Barney's salon or anything by Michelangelo. I guess it would be too gauche to suggest that Michelangelo's drawing of Jupiter in eagle form snatching up Ganymede go on the chapel ceilings?

That 1913 law should be a hell of a note to Romney. Really, whenever you find yourself invoking a Jim Crow law, you know you're on the wrong side.

Glad to see that Mass. is coming out on the right side of things.

May you remain married for at least as many years as Harold and I (29 and counting. We're hoping to get close to his parents 51 years.)
Which means that same sex marriage will become a more common thing around here. And that the right wing will fail to stop the process. :)

Especially since Mitt is the last person who should make noise about residency requirements. When he ran for governor, he had to explain that he hadn't noticed a $54K break he'd gotten on hs property taxes in Park City...for the residential exemption.

Hooray! Good news indeed. Which is especially nice because all the news out of America that we hear over here in England tends to be fairly ghastly.

By the way, El, I want to make sure you know that your work was discussed on the Endicott blog this week, June 9th and 13th entries, with a couple of nice comments on the latter: http://endicottstudio.typepad.com

There are no residency requirements for getting married here in Ontario, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2003. We love the economic benefits of having people come from all over the world to get married here. :)

Someone got the New York State comptroller to calculate the net economic benefits of same-sex marriage for the state. He came up with $184 million, most of that going to the city. And that's after subtracting any additional costs to businesses for health insurance; in addition to the obvious stuff, like lots of hotel room nights and catered weddings, he noted that businesses might have lower recruiting costs because more people would want to live and work here.

Some of those benefits would be because the state would be the destination for such weddings for the moment, of course.

I can believe it, and given how those kinds of assessments are done, it's probably on the conservative side. There's money to be had, that's for sure, and I'd imagine Mass. businesses will have something to say if they feel like they aren't getting their chance at a piece of the pie.

James and I were in DC when the vote was taken. Ironically, though I stopped at Lambda Rising and the HRC Store, I didn't know about it. James had an internet connection at his meeting and saw it on the news during a break. We were both delighted with the news.

On Friday afternoon, we flew from DC to Boston, took a cab into Cambridge, and got to enjoy some nostalgia. We're staying near where we held our wedding. Last night we got to kiss at the spot of our first married kiss.

As I'm prone to saying, gay marriage equality isn't really a question of if, just a matter of when. Even if the ban issue comes up again in a few years, it's liable to have even less support than it does now...
