Relic of a lost city
Sep. 20th, 2005 07:28 pmCaroline Stevermer, one of my oldest friends and author of A College of Magics, When the King Comes Home and other fine works of fiction, has published a moving tribute to New Orleans in the Mpls StarTribune. Her sense of place is one of the things I love best about her writing (oh, that and the witty dialogue and engaging characters and exquisite sentences and, well, all that) - it's good to see it here, as well, evoking a city many of us have loved.
I also received a note from the folks at American Public School Endowments (what a magnificent concept!) in Lafayette, Louisiana, inviting readers and writers to help rebuild schools damaged by Katrina. One of the things they do is to raise funds by inviting authors to sell their books through their website at booksxyz.com. If you buy from them, "5% of each sale goes to the school or college of the customer's choice. The majority of profits from each sale return to the public schools in the purchaser's local area." This aspect of the site is a bit confusing - they seem to be just getting started - but it looks like a very worthy effort to support public schools and readers there.
