First of all, warmest congratulations to Danielle Bennett & Jaida Jones (they're on here somewhere with amusing monikers, I know, but I forget which): their new collaborative novel, Havemercy, has just been released by my own publisher, Bantam Spectra, and because I was Very Good I got to read an advance copy of the ms. last year. I loved it - here's the quote I provided: “Delicious! The characters are unique, entrancing and believable: dinner-party guests you never want to see go home. I will gladly walk again in this city, now that I know my way around.” -- OK, I was in Japan, and jet-lagged. And did I mention I hate writing quotes? I never feel I do a book justice, and I probably didn't here. I think my first draft (I scribble enthusiastic notes at the backs of mss. as I read, hoping it will all come together by the time I'm done) was something about wriggling with delight and wanting to sit on the characters' laps. Hey, it's that kind of book. But no point in scaring the horses.

How they met and wrote and sold Havemercy is a great story, and of course Danielle's hometown (Victoria, B.C.) paper is right on it, with a biiiig feature interview. A mignonette sent me the link, and I am quite dewy-eyed to see D&J giving me Muse credit. . . . . and really amused to see how the journalist mangled whatever they actually said to him into:

Ellen Kushner, whose award-winning mythical tales of sword-fighting and medieval battles have sold thousands of copies. . . .

Danielle & Jaida, welcome to the Wonderful World of Journalism! I know it's not your fault. I've done dozens of these, and they always mangle your facts and then you read the article and go, "Whaaaaat?! That's not what I said!" Once I was young & indignant, but you get over it. It's a swell article, and should do a lot of good. As Dear Oscar said, "There is one thing worse than being interviewed . . . . "

And thanks for the plug!
