ellenkushner: (Bordertown)
Caught 2 pieces today - one on local NPR station WNYC, one in NYTimes - both coincidentally about NYC's Lower East Side (which was, in the 80s when it was dangerous, run down, full of squatters & rockers & artists, definitely an inspiration for Bordertown's SoHo):

• Kids run all-night volunteer deliveries to keep a beloved neighborhood candy store open in the face of gentrification

• "Trade School" barters stuff a teacher lists as wanted in exchange for teaching a class (“I made sort of a strange list. I asked for Legos, socks, sharp cheddar cheese, '90s hip-hop 12-inch records, and general ephemera . . . I walked away with exclusively sharp cheddar cheese . . . . I was really hoping for Legos . . . but no. Nothing but cheese.")
