omfg - just did a one-hour radio broadcast with a guy who talks even faster than me. In French. I'm told I acquitted myself well, but it was a nerve picnic. Earlier today I did 2 interviews, one involving reading aloud from A la Pointe de l'Epee for several pages. Fortunately, Maud had coached me on my liaisons & the hard words. Radio & reading will be up on line later this week; I'll try and let you know.

As you may know, I don't wear buttons in the U.S. But as I was getting on the plane I realized I needed to sport an Obama button over here. Fortunately, Ruth Dreier in Amsterdam had one (with "Obama" spelled out in Hebrew - perfect!). Let me tell you, friends, if Europeans could vote (and believe me, they take a lively interest in the politics of the richest and most powerful nation on earth), it would be a landslide. We stopped at the late-night grocery on the way home. The French-African checkout girl was very enthusiastic. When someone across the aisle opined that Obama was not going to make it, she said emphatically, "The world will be a better place. You'll see. The bad traces [or maybe it's "trail" - did she say traces?] of Bush will be erased."

I'm a US expat living in the UK (and a new reader and visitor to your blog), and when I handed my absentee ballot to the Black clerk who waited on me at my local post office, I told her what it was. She burst into tears, saying she never would've imagined that she'd actually handle a real live ballot for Obama.

Man, I wish I were there. Even more than I usually do, because over here, tout le monde is suffering from what [livejournal.com profile] 1crowdedhour accurately diagnosed as Election Derangement Syndrome. Our nerves are in tatters. We want it to be over, the wait is killing us; we can barely believe that there are still another eight days of this to live through.

I feel sure my nerves would be better if I were in Paris. Well, almost sure. I think I'd better check fivethirtyeight.com again. Aaahhhhhhhhhh!!

Canada is (as usual) solidly Democrat.

If you haven't seen it yet, you really really need to see this:

http://whipup.net/2008/10/27/crafting-politics-slogan-sweater/

It shows a very cute knitted dress with slogan "My Jewish Grandma is voting for Obama. Is yours?" on the front and "Chosen People Choose Obama" on the back.

From her lips to God's ears!

I wish that could be true, but the body count is a bit too high. There are a lot of people who ain't coming back.

Yeah, it's a pity we can't vote. Especially when the last eight years have affected the entire world so much. No wonder we take an interest. I've not spoken to a single person here (Sweden) who would vote other than Obama. Pailin scares the living daylight out of me!

The bickering French Left is for Obama, the vapid French Center is for Obama, the crappy French Right is for Obama, I just can't imagine anyone who would vote for McCain, over here.

If we could vote, this would go beyond a landslide: the score would make any dictator die from acute envy.

My postal ballot for Obama has already been received in Boulder, Colorado. (You can check on-line with them.) I'm in the UK. My colleagues (I teach A-level English at an FE college) are all solidly for Obama, as are my British friends and my (British) husband. Our news is filled with election details, btw; I'm sure it's far more coverage than the US media gives to our elections. (I have dual citizenship and vote in both country's elections, btw.)
