Romance Readings in NYC & Share the Love donates books to shelters

Got this note from blogger Ron Hogan, containing info of interest to New Yorkers but also to anyone anywhere who wants a really great place to send her/his overstocked romance novels:

I [Ron Hogan] wanted to remind you quickly about Lady Jane's Salon, a monthly reading series for romance novelists that I began hosting earlier this year.

The readings are fundraising events for Share the Love, a non-profit organization that donates "gently used" romance novels to domestic violence shelters, women's prisons, and other institutions serving women in need.

On Monday, April 6, I'll be joined by special co-host Sarah Wendell,
the co-founder of Smart B*tches, Trashy Books, a popular romance
fanblog, and the co-author of Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart
B*tches' Guide to Romance Novels. Our readers will be Alisa Sheckley
(whose work I've enjoyed since she prefigured the chick lit movement
in the early 1990s with TILL THE FAT LADY SINGS) and Maya Rodale (one
of the founders of the Salon, and a great new historical romance
novelist). The readings are held at Madame X (94 W. Houston St.) and
begin shortly after 7 p.m.; admission is $5 or you can donate at least
one paperback romance.

Most definitely. I love book charities in general and this one in particular I'm definitely going to pass on to romance-reading friends of mine. I'm not much of a romnov fan myself, but the bit on the webpage about romnovs being very woman-centric and about women's journeys struck me -- because for all my personal qualms with the genre and its problematic elements, it is the most woman-dominated and woman-focused of mainstream publishing genres, to my knowledge. I really like the spirit of this charity.
