My Worldcon Schedule
Aug. 19th, 2006 03:41 pmWe'll be in Anaheim, CA, August 23-27 at LAcon. Here's my schedule:Item 1: Wed 8/23 2:30 PM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: NEW MAPS OF HEAVEN
Precis: Recent times have seen an explosion of science fiction and fantasy tales centered in cosmologies and mythologies outside of the North American mainstream. Writers discuss what draws them to these other mythos and what lessons they offer.
----------------------------------------
Item 2: Wed 8/23 5:30 PM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: CHARACTER VS. PLOT
Precis: Some readers (and writers) seem to be all about the characters. Others are only interested in the details ofthe plot. Can you write for both audiences? Should you?
----------------------------------------
Item 3: Thu 8/24 11:30 AM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: SEXUAL STEREOTYPING
Precis: There have been strong, female characters in science fiction at least since Jirel of Joirey. This genre hasn't avoided the pitfalls entirely but it's done better than many. Or has it?
----------------------------------------
Item 4: Thu 8/24 4:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: READING: ELLEN KUSHNER
[Hot damn! a whole hour! That's a lot of Privilege !]
----------------------------------------
Item 5: Fri 8/25 10:00 AM, 60 minutes.

--------------------------------
Item 6: Fri 8/25 5:30 PM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: WRITING: THE LONG & THE SHORT OF IT
Precis: Why are some people good at writing novels but not short stories? What does it take for an idea to be `novel length'? Are short stories just like novels only you finish sooner?
----------------------------------------
Item 7: Sat 8/26 1:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: AUTOGRAPHING: ELLEN KUSHNER
--------------------------------------------
SUPERSPECIAL ITEM: SATURDAY NIGHT POST-HUGO IAF BASH
a Secret Guerrilla Interstitial Arts Party - watch for the Signs & Portents directing you to our Treehouse on the Genre Borders.....
----------------------------------------
Item 8: Sun 8/27 11:30 AM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: PAGE 119
Precis: Can you really tell if a book is good by randomly opening it and reading a page or two? Our panelists will read selected works aloud and let the audience decide if it was any good. Then they'll reveal what it was they were reading from. Oops.
You know I'm only dying to do this....
The complete con schedule (with full panel descriptions) is up here.
