What obsolete skill are you?

You are 'Latin'. Even among obsolete skills, the tongue of the ancient Romans is a real anachronism. With its profusion of different cases and conjugations, Latin is more than a language; it is a whole different way of thinking about things. You are very classy, meaning that you value the classics. You value old things, good things which have stood the test of time. You value things which have been proven worthy and valuable, even if no one else these days sees them that way. Your life is touched by a certain 'pietas', or piety; perhaps you are even a Stoic. Nonetheless, you have a certain fascination with the grotesque and the profane. Also, the modern world rejects you like a bad transplant. Your problem is that Latin has been obsolete for a long time.

I think I got Latin, too. I wanted to be Shorthand, dammit.

Y'know, this is definitely my favourite silly quiz so far. Everyone just comes out so cool...

Given the composition of these questions, I am of course also Latin, as in the nature of things I should rightly be.

I am also Latin.

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres...

The quiz says only 11% score "Latin," but it seems to be a common answer for SF-related folks. Coincidence, or... ;->

BTW, Ellen, I LOVE the photo you use for your icon. That is so you!

Hey - I wanna be metric verse!

But I suspect I am too asymmetric.

Oh, yay! A story goes with it - and someday I will post it.

For a sec I thought you were referring to the brand new photo on my homepage
http://www.ellenkushner.com
which I think is much better than my old one, too.

Your icon photo definitely has your spirit, and I definitely recognize it as you because I know you - not subtle enough for the Real You, though! But what is?

Do I LOOK French?

What obsolete skill are you?

You are 'French'. In the nineteenth century, it was the international language of diplomacy. It is a 'beautiful' language, meaning that it is really just a low-fidelity copy of Latin. You know the importance of communicating 'diplomatically', which for you means both being polite and friendly when necessary and using sophisticated, vicious sarcasm when appropriate. Your life is guided by either existentialism or nihilism, depending on the weather. You have a certain appreciation for the finer things in life, which is a diplomatic way of saying that you are a disgusting hedonist. Your problem is that French has been obsolete for a long time.

Maybe you can help with with this.

Got any idea what "Your home is like a tornado, but in a nice way" and "Believe in the strings" would be in Latin?

Thanks. (If only for not hitting me...)

Goddammit - I"M French!!!!!

OK, wait, no, I've read the description - I guess I'm Latin after all. You're "really just a low-fidelity copy of" moi.

Sorry, my Latin skills are over 30 years rusty.

There's a book out there called something like "Latin for Everyday Use." You might be able to cobble together a rough translation from words in there.

Well, hey, thanks.

That photo is of the real me, but on a weird day in early 2004. I'd been up at my uncle's funeral in Vermont, meeting relatives I hadn't seen in ages (and their children whom I'd never met). The photo was taken on the roof deck of my cousin's house, with the sun sinking over Lake Champlain.

One thing I like about this test is that it isn't immediately obvious which answer leads to which skill - maybe because the skills themselves are so damned obscure....

I was Gregg shorthand. Which is kind of amusing to anyone who's seen my handwriting, but that's a very limited pool.

I got Latin too!

I don't think "French" is obsolete, though. Lots of actual real people speak French as their actual language, whereas only those in Vatican City speak Latin. Only dead languages are obsolete!
