Winners of this year's Locus Awards, voted by readers of Locus Magazine in the annual Locus Poll, were were announced this afternoon (June 16) at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Seattle.

The Privilege of the Sword won the 2007 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel of 2006.

Here is the acceptance speech I gave Caroline to deliver just in case:
Before I was a published author, I was a junior editor, and my boss, David Hartwell, generously took me on my first ever visit to San Francisco. Our first stop was a late-night Locus party at Charles Brown’s house. I was jetlagged and miserable in a room full a strangers. Our host noticed this, and invited me to sneak out the back with him for a walk in the nearby hills.

I saw the stars, and breathed fresh air, and smelt live eucalyptus for the first time. I’ve never forgotten that. So you can see why the Locus Award means a lot to me. I really wish I could be here today to wish Charles, and Locus, a very happy couple of birthdays. [They are celebrating Charles' 70th in Locus' 40th year.]

When I left editing, David Hartwell continued his support by becoming my first editor; I want to thank him now, as well as my current editor, Anne Groell [GROLE], at Bantam Spectra. I wrote this book for Delia Sherman, and it would not be all that good without her. There are a number of other people I should thank, but they’re not here and they’ll never know [oops!] – so instead I’ll take the time to thank Locus and its readers for caring about my book, and all the other writers for giving me something to measure up to . . . and finally, Caroline Stevermer, one of my oldest friends, for agreeing to stand up and read this to you if I won.

-- I put that last bit in because no one ever pronounces her name correctly, so this was her big chance to straighten the record: Caroline (long i) STEEV-er-mur, fyi.

I am beside myself with joy - but I also feel a bit sheepish, as it's a poll and I know a lot of you loyalists voted the Riverside slate - but then I look at the list of winners in all categories, and think, "Well, the voters sure have good taste in other stuff - maybe it's all OK!" Congrats again to all my pals who won, and to all my pals who were nominated - it was a glorious year for writing. And again, thank you.
