World Fantasy Convention 20007
Aug. 23rd, 2007 09:03 pmMany thanks to all for your generous congratulations on the World Fantasy Award nomination of TPOTS for Best Novel. I had always thought this award was something of interest only to the cognoscenti; but either it's gotten bigger, or there are a lot of cognoscenti out there!
If you're interested in attending the convention, my pals on the committee tell me not to be too put off by the rumored scarcity of hotel rooms: over the coming weeks, people who booked rooms early but have decided not to come are cancelling, so keep checking back to see if rooms are now available.
I've gotten a sneak peek at the proposed panels - don't they look great? If you want to be on one, be sure to register in time to get your Qualifying Panelist Invitation.

Date: 2007-08-24 01:26 am (UTC)Only if I were to sneak into a plane's luggage bin with just the clothes on my back. Like in Buffy. X3 But I couldn't leave the Marcusmobile alone for so long! We're just still getting acquainted, this is a crucial stage! And he'd be frightened all alone.
Wait: do you know, liek, if TPOTS has *won* yet? Like, is it a You-May-Have-Already-Won-This-Award-type nomination, or This-Is-An-Honorable-Mention-But-We'd-Like-You-To-Show-Up-Anyway-type nomination?

Date: 2007-08-24 03:13 am (UTC)They torture you by making you go to a banquet with all the other nominees and about 200 of your closest friends & colleagues, and wait until all the speeches are over to read the list of nominees - and they actually do tear open an envelope to announce the winner. I've been nominated 3 times (this is my fourth - won the first time for novel, lost for 2 short stories), and I can tell you, it's damned hard to eat your rubber chicken with that hanging over your head.

What was the first novel you won it for? The short stories?

Date: 2007-08-24 11:34 pm (UTC)There are others I hear are terrific, but I have to limit my intake or I'll never get anything done. I do recommend Potlatch, which is run by a lot of the same folks who do Wiscon. I haven't gone to it in years, but check it out.

Date: 2007-08-24 09:22 pm (UTC)I have had The Privilege of the Sword sitting on my "to be read soon" shelf for a while - said shelf having about 50-odd books on it, because writers whose work I adore keep writing, which is of course A Good Thing.
I finished reading it this morning, and I would like to say thank you for writing this book. I've enjoyed the Riverside books very much, and this one lives up to the excellence of its predecessors. The nomination is well-deserved.
