Received yesterday from our friend in Boston, whose cousin is missing in the Himalayas:

This is an update for those who have been keeping my cousin Shyamal and his four fellow-climbers in their thoughts and prayers. First of all, thank you! The family greatly appreciates your support.

[....] A valiant and massive search is on-going. Progress is slow because of the treacherous terrain and many days of bad weather, but despite the fact that my cousin and his team have been missing for over two weeks, the good news is that the searchers have not given up. Nor have we. The search area has been expanded and teams are working whenever the weather permits. Please continue to keep these young men in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks again.

I don't know what brought them to my previous LJ entry about him, but old friends of Shyamal's have been posting there & finding each other. Moving & heartening.

Speaking of friends & good causes - but moving onto the kinder terrain of the Arts world - I received a note from Nubar Alexanian -- a remarkable photographer from Gloucester, Mass., whose book of portraits of musicians (including Wynton Marsalis, Philip Glass, Emmylou Harris, the Roches, Patty Larkin...), Where Music Comes From, is a favorite of mine -- about a new project:

I've been collaborating on a book with filmmaker Errol Morris for the past 15 years. It's called NONFICTION. Unfortunately, no other publishers will be able to get it out in time for the release of Errol's new film, Standard Operating Procedure, (about Abu Ghraib prison April 2008). So I'm forced to publish it under my own imprint Walker Creek Press. This is a really important body of work for me, and I would like this book to be part of the discussion that will be generated by this provocative film.

In order to do this, I have to pre-sell a minimum of 250 books over the next [three] weeks [...]. You can find out more about the book and pre-order [advance discount] copies
