Reading Saturday at ArtBeat!
Jul. 11th, 2005 03:54 pmAbout 9 years ago, when Delia was reading for the Tiptree Awards and we saw him almost every day, we used to tell our UPS guy, "Somerville is the Paris of the 90's!" He considered who else was on his route (jazz harper Deborah Henson-Conant, for one) and finally agreed with us. What it is in 2005 I'm not sure - the Overflow of the Cambridge Yuppies, perhaps - it figures, the artists move in and establish cafes, and soon the rest are wanting one too . . . But one of the delights of this community is the annual ArtBeat festival in Davis Square, which is this coming weekend.
Delia & I will each be reading 6-minutes' worth of sizzling prose (she from her forthcoming novel Changeling and I from my You Can Buy This Right Now for Instant Gratification novel Thomas the Rhymer) on Saturday, as part of
Somerville writers present: A Literary Mixer
This year’s “Mix & Mash” theme is perfectly suited to writers, who use bits and pieces of everything they can wrap their imagination around. Artbeat’s literary mixer will take place at Jimmy Tingle’s theatre. In the spirit of mixing it up, many different kinds of writing -- including children’s literature, science fiction, mystery, plays, as well as other forms of fiction and nonfiction -- will ‘collage’ the event, and showcase the wide variety of writers living in Somerville.
3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 16th
Jimmy Tingle Off-Broadway Theater
Davis Square, Somerville, MA
See you there?

Date: 2005-07-11 02:00 pm (UTC)I wish. Massachusetts is at least closer to Philadelphia than the Texas cons
*reading Delia's website* I hadn't realized a writer of fantasy was called a "fantasist."
I like her reasons for preferring cafes for writing. :-)

Date: 2005-07-11 02:33 pm (UTC)I just started TTR, by the way, although because of life craziness I've only been able to read it in fits and starts and haven't had a chance to really sink into it yet.

And was planning on having lunch near Davis Square.
So yes! See you there.
Have added you to my friendslist, too; hope you don't mind.

Date: 2005-07-11 07:30 pm (UTC)Yes - I and only I possess Delia's Secret Cellphone Number - that way, if her phone every disturbs her by ringing in the cafe, she knows it's someone she loves. (And even then, she can be grouchy about it!)

Date: 2005-07-12 06:15 am (UTC)I'll be bringing my husband and my boyfriend. (Only a bit complicated to be me, yes.) The boyfriend is Bostonian, but the husband has yet to experience Davis Square. The big used bookstore and the Diesel would've been incentive enough, but this is even better!
