About 9 years ago, when Delia was reading for the Tiptree Awards and we saw him almost every day, we used to tell our UPS guy, "Somerville is the Paris of the 90's!" He considered who else was on his route (jazz harper Deborah Henson-Conant, for one) and finally agreed with us. What it is in 2005 I'm not sure - the Overflow of the Cambridge Yuppies, perhaps - it figures, the artists move in and establish cafes, and soon the rest are wanting one too . . . But one of the delights of this community is the annual ArtBeat festival in Davis Square, which is this coming weekend.

Delia & I will each be reading 6-minutes' worth of sizzling prose (she from her forthcoming novel Changeling and I from my You Can Buy This Right Now for Instant Gratification novel Thomas the Rhymer) on Saturday, as part of
Somerville writers present: A Literary Mixer
This year’s “Mix & Mash” theme is perfectly suited to writers, who use bits and pieces of everything they can wrap their imagination around. Artbeat’s literary mixer will take place at Jimmy Tingle’s theatre. In the spirit of mixing it up, many different kinds of writing -- including children’s literature, science fiction, mystery, plays, as well as other forms of fiction and nonfiction -- will ‘collage’ the event, and showcase the wide variety of writers living in Somerville.

3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 16th
Jimmy Tingle Off-Broadway Theater
Davis Square, Somerville, MA

See you there?

See you there?

I wish. Massachusetts is at least closer to Philadelphia than the Texas cons [livejournal.com profile] marthawells attends and the L.A.-area ones at which Barbara Hambly appears from time to time.

*reading Delia's website* I hadn't realized a writer of fantasy was called a "fantasist."

I like her reasons for preferring cafes for writing. :-)

Well, if there were a way to lock this post for Only People I am Sure Live within 10 Miles of Boston, I would, to spare you - though, waitaminute - Stranger Things Happen - see Shadesong, below!

Yes - I and only I possess Delia's Secret Cellphone Number - that way, if her phone every disturbs her by ringing in the cafe, she knows it's someone she loves. (And even then, she can be grouchy about it!)

Oooh, maybe. The only part of Somerville I am intimately familiar with is the Bickford's.

I just started TTR, by the way, although because of life craziness I've only been able to read it in fits and starts and haven't had a chance to really sink into it yet.

Ah, my dear - if you don't know Davis Square, you do not know the true joy of living here. (For those old enough to remember: it's Like Harvard Square Used to Be before it became a giant open-air mall: indie cafes, used bookstore . . . .)

If Somerville is the Paris of the '90s, how does the Bickfords fit in I wonder?

Le Hash Smash, I'm guessing. Mon dieu!

Anyway, again, maybe we'll stop down, it sounds like fun.

Please be sure and introduce yourself - or will I know you by the freesias in your hair?

Hopefully it will be the freesias and not the smell of old, unopened rooms.

But yes, if I stop by I will introduce myself. :)

I leapfrogged over here via a few friends-list jumps. Perked up when I saw your name (love your work). Saw Davis Square. Lamented, as I do several times a day, the fact that I do not yet live in Boston (the move is planned for as-soon-as-my-husband-finds-work-please-gods-please), and wrote the event off in my brain...

...and then noticed the date.

Hey! I'm visiting Boston this weekend.

And was planning on having lunch near Davis Square.

So yes! See you there.

Have added you to my friendslist, too; hope you don't mind.

Delightful and delighted!

The ArtBeat festival is so much fun - lots happening on the street(s), from live music to crafts . . . hope you get whoever you're having lunch with to come hang out & enjoy it! (Hope it doesn't get rained out . . .!)

*nods* I clicked over after replying - sounds like lots of fun!

I'll be bringing my husband and my boyfriend. (Only a bit complicated to be me, yes.) The boyfriend is Bostonian, but the husband has yet to experience Davis Square. The big used bookstore and the Diesel would've been incentive enough, but this is even better!

Alas, no. I have a birthday party in NYC that day, and the boyfriend insists on leaving as soon as my Harry Potter book arrives in the mail.

There shall be others, though.
