Indeed, the Bloomsbury group and its circle of connections is rife with amazing stories like this. They are not all happy, but I continue to be fascinated with the many examples of unconventional living they provide.

His translation of the Sappho fragments is one
of my favorites. It had a major influence on my
writing -- really. I still have my little paperback
copy circa 1972 or so!

Well I suppose that's what one does in this neck of the woods...just never expected the NY TIMES to tell everyone.
Ellen, Emory & Henry where Roche taught in the 70's is just north of Abingdon, where you and Delia taught Creative Writing Days during the Highlands Festival.
I'm going to ask around and try to locate former students/faculaty who knew him.
