Hmm, the first one brings to my mind an episode of the TV show Torchwood, called "Countrycide". But I find myself hankering after the other one, even though no one would get it.
P.S. I just read Swordspoint (one of my very favourite books now - I read it twice in a week), and friended you. Is that all right?
Unfortunately I am a starving student and would be unable to pay. Instead I may whap out the glitter glue and/or cross-stich and fabricate one of my own using one of the 2302 tiny black tees I already own. ;) I hope other people buy them though! I'm certain it'd catch on if there was such a thing as a Riverside convention.
Riverside spelt correctly, definitely. And I think the 'Riverside' makes the three words you need for a balanced rhythm, although what I would know about balanced rhythm you could write on a postage stamp, I am the person at a concert who always, but always, claps on the wrong beat.
Suicide, Homicide, Regicide, Riverside, and I'm buying it. Especially since I gave my "Knowledge Is Power, Power Corrupts, Study Hard, Be Evil" to my daughter.
If people like you could come up with some quotes from Swordspoint you'd want on shirts, I could do them in fancy script. I couldn't put artwork on shirts though because I don't have the rights.
I am so totally dying (in a *good* way) at the thought of this!!
You couldn't use the original artwork because of copyright, but maybe we could have a contest for Riverside T-shirt art! (I get to judge, of course....)
I also suspect that the detail of the Clouet painting - used by Small Beer Press for the TPOTS hardcover, and at the top of this page as my icon - is out of copyright, it being 400 years old and all. Would that do?
Or just one of the swords that Theo Black used on my website's Swordspoint pages - they are all terrific rapiers that look about right.
There is also the possibility that I could sweet-talk Thomas Canty into sketching us something. Maybe. What would you like? I can't design my way out of a wet paper bag.
I absolutely love Thomas Canty's artwork to death. It's brilliant. Cafepress can do tons of things, including posters, (23 by 35 inches and 11 by 17 inches), and I know I would love it if somehow you could get Mr. Canty (or the publisher, or who ever holds the rights, because I know that can get quite complicated) to allow prints to be made of the covers. I would especially love a print of the Swordspoint cover myself.
The Clouet painting is gorgeous... If the rights to it truly have all expired I could put it on a shirt. Also the swords could work as well.
And I know that if you have a contest for Riverside artwork, I would definitely try something, with my own modest talents.
*Waves arms around!* Hey! Anyone currently rereading any of the Riverside books, (or has them memorized...) and want to come up with a list of quotes to put on the shirts? I have an idea for putting two of the Theo Black swords on the front of a shirt (crossed of course), and a quote on the back. Because of Cafepress's restrictions, it couldn't be a black shirt, but I think it could still look very nice.
I was in a weird mood so I added a few more products, including a "Riverside" thong, dog outfit, baby jumpsuit, and other items I expect no one would ever buy. However, the "Riverside" stein definitely works.
OK, howbout this? You go ahead and announce what you want to do on your site: Invite people to contribute quotes, art, what have you . . . . That way there will be a central place to send folks, which I will then do, and you can take over from there with as much as you feel you can handle. Just let me know when you've got something up. (It could essentially be the same as what you wrote here, but if it's a fresh post, it'll be easier for people to find.)
Meanwhile, I'll check with Small Beer about the Clouet rights, and also try to contact Canty. Which Swordspoint cover is it you love? He did 2: a grayish one with a single figure of a swordsman, and the current Bantam one, with 2 figures. There used to be prints of the single figure - I'll have to ask what happened to them.
Thanks again for doing this. I'm just thrilled. I wish there were a way for you to make some real $$ with this - but you're right, CafePress is pretty pricey all on its own . . . .
Well, if you don't mind, I can add a small commission of one dollar or so, which wouldn't really increase the price per person, but would hopefully cover the cost of making this shop a pro shop ($6 a month, gives me many more options). Also, if I make enough to buy me a shirt, that would be spectacular.
The Canty cover I was thinking of was the Bantam one, with 2 figures. I haven't seen the other one, and a quick look on Google didn't turn it up.
I will create a post in my LJ account about this endeavor, and then put a link on your journal.
I don't mind at all! Sounds like an excellent idea.
The other Canty cover may be seen here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812536444/ref=nosim/viablparadthewri or here http://www.alibris.com/search/books/qwork/6499009/used/Swordspoint and a better version, the original, here: http://www.obsidianbookshelf.com/html/swordspoint.html
I changed it to "Suicide Homicide Regicide Riverside", and I changed the font to something prettier. I also added a women's plus size, and I can put the image on other thinks like coffee mugs and stuff if people want.
Also, I want to repeat that I didn't mark up the cost of any of these products so I won't be making any money off of them. Cafepress charges enough money anyway.
“Suicide Homicide Hericide Riverside”? :3 Riverside spelled correctly would make it more recognizable, but ‘cide is just CUTE! X3 ...Oh! Or "tomecide" (destruction of books)? Or "suitorcide" (killing of a suitor/suit...the Michael Godwin Affairs)? Or "famicide" (ruining someone's reputation)? Or facticide (destroying the truth)! (Oooh, they're all so *nifty*! :3)
Thought “hericide”, since “regicide” is more Fotk…oh! But I guess the Riverside timeperiod *is* unspecified… (“Unspecifide”. XD)
Regardless of word choice? This shirt needs to BE.
Oh! Maybe there could even be shirts for the DIFFERENT BOOKS...With the book titles underneath the words in small lettering? Say, if Swordspoint were "Suicide Homicide Hericide Riverside--Swordspoint". And on the other hand, there could be one reading "Famicide Servicide (killing of a deer) Regicide Riverside--Fall of the Kings"! ...And TPOTS could have one, too! *is lame* XD
Getting this shirt might qualify as even more self-indulgent geekery than my "Eddi and the Fey" T-shirt.
...on the other hand, maybe they're about equal. (Once the theater teacher told me "I think I saw them in concert once!" while I was wearing it, and I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing. Sadly, I don't think that could happen with this one--though people could get confused because there's actually an area called 'Riverside' in Minneapolis, near the university.)
