Arrived safely and happily on Tuesday early, and it's been a whirlwind since then - I believe
deliasherman' s been keeping all updated with her usual panache? I just have to say that walking in Amsterdam makes me happier than anything. I can't explain - or rather, I can, but I'm too tired. Suffice it to say that we don't come here for the smoking cafes. We come to walk between the canals and the old houses, dodging the bicycles and stopping for frites or raw herring & onions on brown bread, or coffee and apple cake. And look in windows like stage sets.
IF YOU'RE HERE IN AMST: We'll be at American Book Center (Spui, right?) hanging out and signing stock in the SF section tom'w (Thurs.) from ca. 2:15 - 2:45.
My computer has now crashed so many times I'm afraid to start it again, so correspondence will be spotty (and yes, you can pity me a lot). D & I sharing one machine, so surest way to reach me is to e-mail both of us at once. But one of the nicest things about being away is not being tied to the routine of being tied to constant instant access. Just sayin'.
Leaving on early train for Paris on Friday (so we can get there in time to hear Maud defend her diss at the Sorbonne. - I know. Me, too). Hate to leave here, but as I recall, Paris is pretty nice, too.
The worst part of jetlag is being hungry for weird things at weird hours. The second-worst is having a brain only sporadically.
