Since I can't remember well enough which of my friends are Sarah Caudwell fans to send them this link and not risk missing some, I post it here for all of you (with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jonquil).

I am in California. There are lavender and rosemary plants as high as my waist growing on every other lawn. My little rosemary from NYC just died. They all die when I take them indoors for the winter. We bought a giant bunch of miniature narcissi at the Farmer's Market. It's still cold & rainy, but I care not.

I myself am a lavender-and-rosemary killer. It is a cause of much sadness. I had a lavender bush in my yard once, but only because it appeared all by itself, and I stayed strictly away from it, lest even the touch of my shadow work its devastating magic.

Have you had lavender tea?

All hail Sarah Caudwell

I wrote the entry for Sarah Caudwell in the St James Guide to Crime and Mystery Writers (twice) and reviewed most of her four lapidary mysteries for Booklist. I believe that [profile] kradical on his first trip to London wandered about all the places mentioned in those books.

The link sounded astonishingly like the plots of same. How extraordinary.

enjoy your time and the flora. I have lived here a year (alas, too far away to bug you and Delia for a drink with a fan) and still cannot get over that many places use geraniums, rosemary, jade trees, et al as hedges. This place is forever green, and over regulated and the drivers are boorish. But I wish i knew how gorgeous and verdant 15 years ago.

Enjoy your time! take part in the CA sport of wine tasting. Beats football, kind of, as it is year round.

I am very glad you posted the link here because otherwise I would have missed it.

It might be time for another Sarah Caudwell reread.
