On desayunoencama's journal page, I read of the death of artist Trina Schart Hyman, and responded to it there.

Des., thanks for the link to the obituary as well.

While (unsuccessfully) googling for the lyrics to "Give Me My Flowers While I Live" so I could dedicate them to TSH (I love the version sung by the gospel harmonica player Elder Roma Wilson - we used it at the end of our Sound & Spirit show on Flowers
http://www.wgbh.org/wgbh/pages/pri/spirit/alphabetical.html#033
) to my great surprise, on a Gospel Music site(!) I came across lyrics by Hugh Blumenfeld (a singer/songwriter I've really come to admire) for his goofy yet incisive "[Jesus was a] Longhaired Radical Socialist Jew"!

I thought some people might enjoy it, and as the host of Sound & Spirit I felt I should pass it along:

As the author of highly-regarded, well-reviewed, award-winning novels that don't exactly bring in the big bucks (yes, it's My Life as a Gilbert & Sullivan character), I'm kinda partial to HB "Mozart's Money," myself....

I discovered Hugh Blumenfeld when "Raphael" was getting a fair amount of airplay (netplay?) on Spinner.com aka Radio@netscape.com. I bought one album on the strength of that song, and I intend to buy more.

I really like what he does with both lyrics and tune.

Oh, yay! Hugh Blumenfeld is a minor deity.

I'm particularly fond of "Shoot the Moon" and "Hugh's 30th Birthday Party."

"A quarter of a million miles isn't really that far / it took me two Chevys, but I've done it in my car."

Reminds me of Bob Franke's quip to me once: "I'm paid to drive long distances from coffee house to coffee house, town to town . . . Then, when I get there, they let me sing!"

That's how I feel about writing, when it's not destroying my will to live. "They *pay* me to sit here and *tell stories*?"
