Back when we were in our 20s and dieting because for the first time in our lives we couldn't eat whatever we wanted & stay skinny as 2 fenceposts, my friend [livejournal.com profile] jaguartist introduced me to Butter-Flavored salt to put on popcorn. I was visiting him in New Haven. When I got back to NYC, I bought my own little plastic jar of the stuff. 4 moves later, I have it still - or did: I just used the last of it today (on some "black" popcorn we brought back from the Farmer's Market in Madison). Nothing left. All shaked out. Guess I'd better buy a new one. Sticker's still on the old one: $1.99. McCormick's. Hope they still make it. Wonder what it costs?

I think it's still around. My roommate bought some... er... five years ago. It's still in the refrigerator.

They don't make it any more. But you can buy a similar product here:

http://www.amishmart.com/amt-p-404.html

And it's still just $1.99!

Sadly, they discontinued it back in 2006. :(

Here are some alternatives:

I've never understood butter. Maybe on warm bread or in cookies. But I've always preferred grated Parmesan cheese on popcorn.

I'm a fan of nutritional yeast on popcorn.

I've never seen butter-flavored salt.

I have found that Penzey's Florida Seasoned Pepper works really well on popcorn, even though it's a salt-free blend (which I'm supposed to go with now that I'm all old and hypertensive and stuff, sigh).

That sounds delicious! I'll have to see if I can find that here (Ottawa, Canada).

I bet Penzey's will ship to Canada, for the usual crazy international shipping rates. Apart from that, though, I'm pretty sure their stuff is only available from their retail stores, many of which are near Canada but none of which are actually in it.

We have a little plastic container that is about six years old. But here’s the kicker, when ever it runs out we refill it—from a three pound jar we bought at Big Lots (or some such place) a few years ago. Keep your old little jar. Sorry I didn’t know a few days ago when I saw you two, could have topped you off {our present brand is Act 2 buttery popcorn salt—but I never noticed a difference}. Joyce started putting yeast on the popcorn for the kids when they were little. I can’t even stand the smell of that. But I’m also the only vegetarian in the house and I just avoid anything that’s been cooked that might once have looked back at me. Powered cheese makes for a wonderful diversion on occasion. And the proof that I’m still a wild man—I mix it up occasionally by putting ‘Franks’ red hot cayenne pepper sauce on my bowls of popcorn. I know Texas women who find ‘Franks’ kind of mild as far as hot sauces go. My once innocent little daughter has grown up to be a woman who can deal with most Spanish/Mexican flavors due to her years in Carolina (and yes I know, that’s not so far south as all that). My son, who leans more oriental isn’t adverse to soy sauce—it’s a small world after all.
Buy more local stuff if you like but keep the jar from our youth and I’ll fill it next time we meet (that should be fairly soon)
Best
Jag

Keeping the jar. Awesome. Can't believe McCormick's stopped making it in 2006. O tempora, o mores!
