Delia & I have to drive out to Bayonne from Manhattan tom'w noon to oversee the loading of our antique furniture from the storage unit (which is closing - another "Uncommon Economic Indicator"!) (For those who've been following the story - we managed to sell all her godmother's huge 1850s bedroom set back to the people who've bought the original house in the Garden District that the furniture was built for - which her godmother lived in all her life...)

Since I'll have a car - and we'll need a treat! - Any advice on cool places to shop over there on the way back? The Japanese MegaMall? A Gardening Center (for new plants for our new back yard planters)? Anything .........?

Googlemaps tell me to take Holland Tunnel to I-78 to Bayonne - any second opinions?

"Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike" -- make sure to bring the right travel music. Oh, wait, let me give you a recipe for sucking eggs while I'm at it.

Huh, my dad used to live in Bayonne. Sadly his information is something like 40, 50 years out of date, but I will point my fiance over here, since he should have more current intelligence of the area.

When at last I decided to roam,
So far away from my home in Bayonne.
I sat me down and wrote this poam,
I wrote an ode to New Jersey.
--The Rolling Mills of New Jersey
(unknown, but prob. not John Roberts and Tony Barrand, it predates their recording by at least 15 years.)

If you like Japanese things, then by all means go to Mitsuwa in Edgewater, if that isn't too far out of your way.

Other than that, the best thing I remember about going to Bayonne is looking for the rug store with the giant statue out front of the bottom half of a lumber jack.

I'll try to think of other things in the area while on my way home from work. How far to you want to range from Bayonne? Do you want used book stores? Restaurants? Weird sights along the highway?

And what town are you headed from?

Thank you! We will be driving from Manhattan (Upper West Side) to Bayonne, then coming back - hoping to do something fun and/or useful on the way home. Less interested in cute sights, more in weird shopping.

Too many books in our apt already - food always good, either in restaurants or interesting markets. We also need a decent garden center.

I have been led to believe that Bayonne, NJ, is the muffin capital of the world. You should look into that. It is entirely possible that Mr. Pinkwater has been lying to me.

Well, if you happen to be heading near Teaneck, you could stop at Bischoff's and have an ice cream sundae for me (Or get a babka at Butterflake Bakery. Mmmm, Butterflake...). But for that I think you'd have to go over the GW Bridge, or drive out of your way.

The best way to get to Bayonne if you're driving from Manhattan is to take the Holland Tunnel and get off at Exit 14A on the NJ Turnpike - which, upon exiting the Tunnel, will take you all of 10 minutes to get here.

Once you've taken care of what you need to take care of in Bayonne and you'd like a quick bite to eat, please stop by The Little Food Cafe located at 330 Kennedy Boulevard (I believe @ 10th Street). They've got great sandwiches and salads. For the BEST pizza around - and yes, that includes Manhattan, stop by Pompeii Pizza located at 480 Broadway (btwn 22nd & 23rd Streets). I promise, you won't be disappointed. However, if you're in the mood for a great Italian meal, you have to visit San Vito's restaurant (406 Broadway btwn 18th and 19th Streets) and say hello to Luciano and the BEST Italian food you've ever had.

After your meal, you may want to drive over Liberty State Park in Jersey City or have drinks on the terrace at the Liberty House Restaurant in Jersey City to take in the breathtaking views we residents in Hudson County enjoy that Manhattanites will NEVER see. Or if you like, drive over to Hoboken and stroll along Washington Street for a little shopping as you visit the little boutiques and shops that sit along that strip.

I hope this has been helpful...

Little Food Cafe was a hit! So was the general sense of where the interesting streets were . . . and we definitely want to be back for the things we missed! Thanks again for your help.
