So many wonderful encounters, large and small! Yesterday a woman who teaches scriptwriting told me she uses a scene from Swordspoint (guess which one) to show how you can write a love scene in which no one ever says the words "I love you."

You never know, do you?

Wonderful panel today with fabulous old friends Faye Ringel, P.C. Hodgell & new kid on the block Felix Gilman, whose books I now must read. It was all about historical research in fantasy, and Faye & I kept quoting Delia Sherman - who couldn't figure out why we laughed so hard when she actually turned up in the room about 20 minutes later! Kaffeklatsch with 10 of the nicest (mostly) strangers we've ever sat down with (one of whom brought Tim Horton donuts) - don't have all the names, but thanks, folks; you know who you are!

Yesterday crashed panel (at their invitation) on diction in fantasy w/Guy Kay, David Anthony Durham, Pat Rothfuss & Mark Gascoigne (editor of new Angry Robot Books - who to my surprise said he knew & loved my work!) - it was exceptional, and lots of fun. Oh, and there were fireworks that night. You know how I feel about fireworks.

Plumb outta words - but just found out all my pals (mostly) won Hugos, so will retire in a blaze of bliss. (We skipped Hugos to dine w/Anne Guero & Olivier Dombret from Paris - introduced them to aged Canadian beef - but we did crash the pre-Hugo reception beforehand & see all our friends & wish them luck. It's so lovely seeing everyone all dressed up! It's so lovely being someone who can walk into an exclusive party w/out an invitation.)

All hands and collarbones, right?

Either the one near the beginning (p. 78 in my recent MMPB) where Alec tenses up when Richard mentions the Duchess, even though he keeps his voice even, or the later one where Alec's wasted on Fool's Delight?

"I've brought us some fish" is a very transparent "I love you," the way I read it.

It is, isn't it? :D

Though, it seems to me that Richard does at some point tell Alec he loves him, and vice versa.... but then, they seem like fighting words.

Fighting words indeed. I can't remember it directly, but it wouldn't surprise me. Ah well, I'll have to re-read it again... :-)

Was it the scene where Richard arrives home to Alec in bed, and tells Alec he's killed Lord Horn.
("He hit me," Alec said; "and you killed him.")
And after Richard reveals that he hurt him first, Alec wants Richard to tell him about it.

That's my guess, because it was probably my favorite scene in the whole book. ;)

Scriptwriting - so there would have to be a strong visual element, too. The scene where Richard gives Alec the rings?

Despite the danger, Richard lifted one jeweled hand and kissed it. "Alec," he said against the cold, heavy fingers, "they are for you. Do what you want with them."

Seems to be! Recently retired from her University position, so let's hope she's writing more soon....

Hi, Ellen! Anakin here, I was the person who mentioned the LJ community [livejournal.com profile] little_details on your History and Fantasy panel. The community is an excellent place to ask questions about anything under the sun to assist story accuracy.

It was awesome to have you in Montreal and hopefully we can figure out a good time for your next visit! (Yes, I'm the Con*Cept girl.)

I think there should always be doughnuts and also coffee at all future Kaffeklatsches.

Gosh, *any* scene with them in...they never say it in Swordspoint, but it's just so *strong*, and so clear to readers. You know, it really threw me when Richard came out and said it in TPOTS. ...Well, when I'd finished Swordspoint and gone *back* through TPOTS. :D I suppose Richard's priorities might have changed in self-imposed exile and all, yet Alec seems to consistently say it in actions rather than words...

*rambles* xD

Ooooh, the Hugosss...*epic wistful sigh* WHY isn't it televised, again??
