I got a note from old pal
rachelmanija, who works with The Virginia Avenue Project in LA, asking me to contribute something to their auction. It's a program that helps low-income kids get a sense of self-worth & to achieve academically through doing theatre - how could I refuse? or even want to? This is exactly how I think art saves the world. It's a message we tried to put in every Bordertown story (like a prize in a box of Crackerjacks), fer crissakes!
So I'm donating a hardcover limited edition copy of The Privilege of the Sword. I will personalize & autograph it to the highest bidder at
helptheproject on LJ - here's the link to my book (with thanks to
rm for supervising!).
Here's Rachel's description of The Virginia Avenue Project:
I have been the resident stage manager for the Virginia Avenue Project for the last fifteen years. We mentor low-income Los Angeles children and teenagers, teaching classes in theatre, tutoring them in academics, and partnering with them to create and perform original plays. 100% of our kids graduate from high school. 90% of them go on to college. 85% are the first person in their family to ever go.
As grants for arts and education have been cut, we are in danger of losing our centerpiece program, the One-on-Ones, in which short plays are specially written for each kid to act in with a professional actor. We take them to summer camp to rehearse, then return to Los Angeles to put on a show. This program changes kids’ lives… and it’s not happening this year unless we can raise $15,000 by mid-March.
I have set up an online auction to raise money to save the One-on-Ones. If there’s anything you could put up for auction – perhaps a signed book or ARC, or some other cool piece of memorabilia – it would be enormously helpful.
There's lots of great stuff up already - bid early & often!
