deliasherman 's thumb is on the mend.

It's my Logic Board, which meant that the guy at Apple was able to get the computer back up & running long enough for me to take it home, BACK EVERYTHING UP & in general prepare myself (I hope!!!) for a week's separation while it goes down to Apple Central in Texas for repairs (under warrantee, yay!).

Thanks for the good thoughts & good words, all!  Now I just have to figure out what's gone wrong with the freezer/icemaker......

Backing up

External hard drives are so cheap now -- 500 gigabyte hard drive are about sixty dollars with 1,000 gig drives not much more -- that I back up everything to two drives with the oldest one getting replaced every year.

By which I mean, of course, oh, Apple. Why do you do this to us? But it's a relief to know that the data is now backed up and that the problem is fixable. And, as always, that we need not feel stupid about having been unable to fix it ourselves with a little initiative and googling.

from the symptoms you describe for the freezer/ice-maker I think it might be the logic board.
