After Ralph Vicinanza's Memorial service tonight, we went to a new restau on Amsterdam Ave. (just around the corner from my first apartment - and o what a change is here! that block used to be a total dive) called recipe (sic).  I had duck confit hash, and for dessert a chestnut pannecotta with a glaze of "New York honey."  Sometimes I really like the 21st century.

And now I am going to snuggle up with our dear friend Sarah Smith's new YA novel, The Other Side of Dark - just out from Atheneum -  and see what she's done with it since the Mass All Stars workshopped it last year.  Sarah was staying with us last night before the Memorial (plus visiting her NY publisher) - it was so good having her here!  We miss our Boston friends.

I wanted to go to the memorial, as Ralph was my agent, but I was unable to travel Stateside for it. My thoughts were there all day yesterday and last night. I'm sure it was a fitting farewell to a wonderful man.

Terie, I am so sorry for your loss. Hearing everyone talking about Ralph last night made me long o have known him better & have worked with him myself! (My own agent, Christopher Schelling, was his protege at the agency, and gave a gorgeous talk about him.) Many were the speeches, and the reminiscences at the reception afterwards. Connie Willis couldn't be there, either, but sent in a written talk, which was read by Chris Lotts. I hope it is reprinted somewhere, and that all of Ralph's clients & friends find joy & comfort in shared memories; many summed it up best by saying, "It's horrible that he's gone; but wonderful that we had him with us for so long!"

I still can't believe he's gone. I had a book due to him 30 Sept, and it was absolutely crushing to try to finish it. I eventually did, but it wasn't easy. It's probably silly, but Ralph's presence still permeats the story and the very pages for me.

...plus Susan Allison (sigh), agents from Ralph's office, UK editor Malcolm Edwards, everyone hitting the great bells of love & admiration.
Much laughter, too, as person after person evoked dear Ralph with such clarity and precision.
