Little Golden Books: they launched in 1942 with such now-classic titles as The Poky Puppy, and my own favorite, The Little Red Caboose. . . . and wasn't there something to do with kittens?

Now someone has made a "Storybook gown" constructed entirely out of children's Golden Books.

She explains: The skirt is comprised entirely of the illustrations from the books sewn together with metallic gold thread, and the bodice is made from the books' foil spines.

Oh, those golden spines! They looked like Baroque ornament, lending dignity and posh attitude to otherwise cheerful little stories for sticky little hands. Bitterly metallic on the tongue, they eventually flaked off most satisfactorily.

I don't know who Ryan Novelline is, but I want her for my own personal couturier.  Just look at this thing!

That is really awesome. It's like wearing childhood, and couldn't get any better if she made it out of Little house on the Prairie and Madeline L'Engle pages.

Oh, but for Little House on the Prairie, all it would need to be is Mary's best brown cashmere dress for college! Didn't you covet that? I SURE DID.

Oh absolutely, which is probably why I am a dressmaker now... Though I still haven't worked in period for Little House. I should fix that.

I haven't sewn recently, but I found, on a Goodwill run, an amazing black velvet jacket with pleated taffeta trim at the cuffs and all around the collar/front/hem JUST LIKE THE TRIM ON MARY'S DRESS. For $5! MINE MINE ALL MINE.

"The Shy Little Kitten." It's a pretty random story. What a neat idea!

That is awesome! This woman needs to be on Project Runway. The dress is absolute genius. I have to pass the pic along to our Children's librarian!

Thanks! I hope she is getting lots of joy out of this. I know it's been around for awhile, and even debated posting this lest the punters mock -but I keep learning that just when you think everyone's seen the latest Cool Thing on the Internet . . . . And so I proudly wave the flag for: "I am probably the last to hear about this - no, wait, you are, too!"

A public service of the time-lagged Ellen Corporation. It makes me so happy to be able to share my latent discoveries.

I don't care how many times I've seen it posted, it's so cool I'm always excited to see it again.
