You're always wanting me to help you cast the SWORDSPOINT movie (or 12-part BBC er HBO, baby!) adaptation . . . . Richard St Vier is fairly easy, as there are many actors who have the look and feel. But Alec is much harder, as his type is never the lead.

Tonight we saw the BBC adaptation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood on PBS, and I liked the look of David Dawson (playing Bazzard). He is spectacularly lanky, and his delivery of "Here is the post - o joy" was spot on.  I'm not saying that some of your other choices haven't been brilliant, as well, or that he is my ideal perfect choice - but since I don't watch a lot of film/TV, I thought I ought to speak up when I actually do see someone reasonable.  So here's a photo I found, though not the best shot for our purposes.

Here is one from his agents (United Agents, UK):

I can definitely see Alec there.

Oooh, interesting. I shall definitely watch this evening. Thanks!

Here's where I have to admit that I only saw the last hour of the 2nd part . . . but that worked for me!

In this one, definitely.

He was excellent! As I watched I kept thinking, "He looks really familiar." And then I remembered [livejournal.com profile] fengtianshi's fanart (http://fengtianshi.deviantart.com/art/Romance-in-Riverside-169050829). You think?

Ellen, your picture definitely has a TPOTS Alec look to it, which is good because I've not yet found a TPOTS Alec.

Delia & I just watched THE BROTHERS BLOOM - which is an utterly brilliant movie - have you seen it? - and decided that Adrian Brody would do for Alec, too.

Has anyone else ever suggested this?

I don't now that anyone has suggested Adrian Brody, but he's definitely got the look!

Yum - I say yes to both, as younger/older Alec. His eyes are too dark though, but green contact lenses would do the trick!

And of course the nose is a bit short - but you can't have everything.

That's certainly how I've always imagined Alec. Portraying disdain would be the key ability, and it looks like this guy has it in spades.

Oh, it's Toby Kent (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vk2lp/characters/toby-kent) from Luther! I've not seen The Mystery of Edwin Drood, but I knew he looked familiar. And I think I can see him as Alec!

"Toby is an upper-class dandy and a psychopath. . . . Eton-educated, skittish, nervy, cruel and terrifying,"

Um, yeah.

I think we've found our boy!

I'm sure he hates being consistently cast as an upper-class psycho, but hard cheese, David Dawson! You do have the most perfect mouth.

He looks even better in Drood with that scraggly long hair.

He's so good at being an upper-class psycho, though!

Now I think I'm going to have to find a way to see Drood, just for the scraggly long hair. :D

Listen, I didn't even see the whole programme, just the last hour - but I liked what I saw, so good luck!

I love Swordspoint too much to ever see a movie of it. Just like I love Tolkien too much to ever see the movies of it.

Thank you!

I feel sure any movie would be a train wreck . . . but since it is never going to happen in my lifetime (though maybe in a future where obscure books of the past that were once shocking are suddenly terribly au courant & marketable - in which case please come to my grave and have a grandchild lay one of your red roses), it's fun to dream.
