In short, Kushner doesn’t use “gay” as a shortcut. I noticed that in Swordspoint (unavoidable, of course), and observed similarly. It was actually a bit more like, "What ho, this seems to have real depth in an area which is rarely even shallow!" Blessings upon your head for that alone. Maybe it'll catch on.
