more apartment stuff
Jul. 17th, 2006 09:28 pmFor those who are interested in same:
Builders have finally gotten bookshelves up in Delia's study, so we've begun clearing out the dozens of boxes that have been making mobility difficult. In the Aesthetic Realm: the Wallpaper Guys finally came last week, and the front hall and diningroom are now all Bradbury & Bradbury'd, with breathtaking results. So is the Guest Room, which means that the new bookshelves can also go up in there, leading to (see above). There is anaglyptic (sp?) wallpaper on the loooong hall ceiling, which now needs to be painted, but when that's done we'll be able to put up the hall lights, which will rid us of the honking great Restoration Hardware box that's been haunting the hall for months.
Parents' visit a huge success - despite the wallpaper happening the morning after they arrived, meaning we had to empty their room first, and then leave the apartment since no one could get down the hallway. Must give parents credit for good sportsmanship. They went to museums (which they do anyway) - we went to "Pirates of the Caribbean" and were utterly happy for 3 hours. Delia says I sound like Jack Sparrow sometimes, and I guess I do. My teeth are a little better, though, and I wear less makeup.
***Wrote the above on Sunday. Many exciting boxes have arrived since then - 65 of them, to be precise, which Delia carried in down the hall with the help of the Polish electrician, who arrived unexpectedly this morning to put up the hall lights, despite the ceiling not having been painted. Our sainted project manager, Ken Rabbins, explained that this was the way it worked: the thing you least expect to happen is what will happen at the least convenient time - as he put it, "The minute you write a note on the wall and your turn your back someone will arrive and paint over it." I adore Ken. He is also the one who explained to me that trying to keep dirt out of things in New York "is like trying to handle atomic waste with an oven mitt."
Glad we got that straight.

Date: 2006-07-18 06:25 am (UTC)I've had the page up since May--the original idea was Galleons for the run-up to the Pirate movie, but we couldn't get the page right. Then my designer did the half page with the friezes and the other half with the map, and well, ta-da! And of course, the computer screen is much smaller than a dining room, and a LJ page can be changed much more easily than actual wallpaper.

Date: 2006-07-19 01:53 pm (UTC)Did I mention our anaglypta was on the *ceiling*? (looks up) I did. It was a gift of our architect, left over from another project where it went on the walls! When the paperers came, our hearts were in our mouths: would there be enough? They got the hall ceiling covered . . . with *2 feet* of paper to spare! Conversation re B&B continues below with meritahut....

Date: 2006-07-19 04:06 pm (UTC)That's a good architect you have there, and the wallpaper was evidently meant to grace your ceiling. There's another wallpaper of roughly the similar period as anaglypta, also heavily textured, that I've been trying to remember the name of and was finally forced to Google--it's lincrusta. Anaglypta sounds much more classic and upscale.

Hello, I'm a fan of your work, Delia's and Interstitial Arts. (Since I don't expect she'll come back and say it herself.)

Date: 2006-07-18 03:44 am (UTC)Oh, I thought maybe you meant you've displayed a complete collection of First Edition Ray Bradbury books in glass cases filled with inert gas.
Seriously, I thought that. I didn't get much sleep last night.
The wallpapers are a fine alternative Bradbury, though. The Bradbury & Bradbury site is splendid. Someday, someday I will have a wall to put some on.

, btw, was the border we had in our upstairs hall. Our old house was much cottage-ier . . . our current place, with its high ceilings & megamoldings, really calls for Morris/Victorian, but we're sticking to Arts & Crafts, just on a grander scale (I notice this as I try to find the Iris on the B&B site - but they are so devilish hard to navigate!).
Anyhow, have fun at Mom's! Sounds extremely promising.
