I am an eldest child. So I never had to go through the petite weirdness of arriving for my first day of school only to have a teacher look closely at me and say, "Oh - are you So-and-So's sister?" in tones that - according to friends with colorful sibs - can range from awed admiration to barely-controlled hostility.

But I am definitely feeling the experience now, with so many Privilege of the Sword reviews coming out that consider it in reference to Swordspoint. Poor Katherine! Good thing she's tough.

And some people have even been coming up to me and saying, sotto voce, that they think they like the new one better than Swordspoint - which is actually encouraging, considering I've gotten a few more years of writing practice under my belt since I wrote my first novel- I'd hate to think I hadn't learned anything in all that time! But, as with siblings, preference for one over another must be a matter of taste. It is only a parent (she said, suddenly switching her role in the family dynamic) who is not allowed to state one. Of course I love all my novels equally!

The latest sibling review is a very nice one by Cynthia Ward on scifi.com - excellent precis, no spoilers (unless you haven't read Swordspoint already, in which case, just skip the first paragraph and you're fine).

Big thanks to Cat over at Green Man Review for letting me know about this one right away - he's turning out to be a better clipping service even than my mom ever was! And the Green Man review of TPOTS - which I cited last week when Cat gave us all a sneak preview - is now officially up in their August issue.

Err, not just yet

I just finished Swordspoint. Went and got it because much of the blogosphere I read has been a-flutter over TPOTS, so I thought I had better start at the beginning. I enjoyed Swordspoint a great deal, and I am very much looking forward to reading TPOTS.

BTW, if you are a San Diego local, or if it isn't too far out of the way for you, would you consider being a panel participant at Conjecture (http://www.conjecture.org) at the end of September? The theme this year is "Fantastic Women", and I have already nudged the programming team to invite you.

Oh pleasepleaseplease invite me to Conjecture next year!! I live on the East Coast, but I have colleagues in San Diego whom I'd love to have the double (triple? I also want to read at Mysterious Galaxy!) excuse to come and visit. Unfortunately, I'm already booked that weekend here - see
http://www.sff.net/people/kushnerSherman/Kushner/upcoming.html
for an updated list....

And thanks again for your kind words about the novels!

Oops - so sorry! I must have misread a note that Cat sent me about it.

Great Copy Line!

And may I just add:

I wish I'd hired whoever writes the lead lines over at http://www.scifi.com/sfw/books/sfw13397.html to write my jacket copy! I agonized for hours about the front cover line, and finally came up with something truly dumb which fortunately was bumped by the Greg Maguire quote. What they (C. Ward?) came up with was just so good:

"The Duke Tremontaine is mad, bad and dangerous to know ... and unfortunately for his 15-year-old niece, he's also her new guardian!"

Perfect.

Mmm, I just finished reading TPOTS and loved it--in a completely different way than Swordspoint, actually. I spent the first few pages of the book feeling startled by the difference and then just stopped worrying about it and loved it completely. I think any preference would have to be based on mood and time of day, or other random factors... :)

The problem with sibling reviews is that it's not enough to have the same author, or even the same setting - when two (or more) books have fundamentally different goals, and different ways of reaching those goals, direct comparison becomes tricky. While it's still possible to compare how well each book uses their respective means to achieve their respective ends, too often it becomes more about which means and ends the reviewer likes more, or has more respect for, and less about the actual quality of the books.

Swordspoint, Fall of the Kings, and TPOTS are radically different books. I can certainly understand someone liking one more than another (for instance, my sister-in-law didn't like Swordspoint because she much prefers books with white-hatted heroes). But they're all so good that a simple "this one is better than that one" is almost going to have to be shallow.

Damn, you're astute. You're right! I can see now how having the same author and the same setting would confuse people - makes perfect sense: most writers don't do things that way. Perhaps each "Riverside" book should come with a warning:
NOT REALLY A SERIES (OR AT LEAST, NOT THE KIND YOU'RE USED TO)! A DIFFERENT PRIZE IN EVERY BOX!

I finished Privilege of the Sword and absolutely loved it ! ( So much so that I backtracked and read Swordspoint, Fall of the Kings, and yes, Thomas the Rhymer). My enthusiasm is such that I felt I must ask you if you planned on writing more, specifically in the Riverside series.

You're a beautiful writer; so engaging and thoughtful...and literary.

I rarely read fantasy before ( with the exception of some of the better known YA titles ) but your books make me want to genre-hop!

:)

Well, my pre-ordered copy hasn't turned up yet so I thought I'd pick up an extra paperback from Amazon ... and got this:

"I am terribly sorry, We have had a problem fulfilling your order as we have run out of stock.

The Privilege of the Sword [Paperback] by Kushner, Ellen
736-0743060-3686748

We have tried to find other copies, but alas we can't
locate one even from the publisher's agents currently.

We sell on a number of other sites and although we update our amazon records daily, there is always a slight discrepancy between our actual stock and amazon stock. As result, we sold our last copy of the above title just before you purchased it."

Which I'm guessing is good for you, but I'm gnashing my teeth here!!!

Picked up my copy of TPOTS yesterday....wow!! I treated myself to a decadent chocolate mousse with a couple of glasses of white wine (they go lovely together) upon starting. I am doing my best not to read it all in one go and am loving it so far. I couldn't possibly say I like it or Swordspoint better...they're siblings and although I'm not the mother...I couldn't choose! Well worth the wait and the suspense, and the torturous glimpses...and...and.. :) Thankyou!

Well, some people consider my work Interstitial - so I think you're safe! Thank you for your very kind words. I'm not sure yet when or how I will return to Riverside, but I suspect I will, one way or another.

Eeep! No, it's not really good for me, not in practical terms - though of course it's nice to know that demand in Britain has exceeded supply, rather than the reverse! But since a certain number of people buy the book because they happen to run across it on bookstore shelves, and this says there aren't any out there, it's discouraging.

All I can tell you is that Amazon US seems to have plenty of copies left. Phew!!

It makes me so happy to know that people are snacking suitably while reading my stuff! If I ever get my butt in gear to do up a web page for TPOTS (which I really must!!! Soon! The Move just kinda knocked the stuffing out of me), I must put up a section called "Things to Eat while reading this book"!

In fact, if I did so - and quoted you - could I also put up your initials (which are...?) and your town/state? And/or a link to your LJ or website?

"Tortuous glimpses"? What can the girl possibly mean...?
(Heh, heh)
Delighted to know you're not disappointed by Swordspoint's little sister.

Something similar has happened on amazon.co.uk with Delia's next book - for months now it's been on my amazon "wish list", marked with a British price tag and saying "available for pre-ordering" but now suddenly it's shifted to saying "currently unavailable", with no British price tag at all - I don't know if I was just too slow in pre-ordering and it's already sold out, or if something else has gone wrong - ? Very depressing. I'm hoping it changes back soon...

feeling priviledged you'd wish to quote my decadent food choices (which reminds me I read quite a bit of Swordspoint while drinking the S-bucks drink "chantico" which was basically a cup of drinking chocolate which (how many whiches have I used now?) went really well with the morning scenes on the Hill). My initials are CE in Vancouver, BC, Canada. No links available..thanks!
