Normally, I try not to speak to anyone before 10 in the morning. Anyone. (11 is better.) But for Jim Freund (and eternal glory), I'm going on "Hour of the Wolf" live at 5 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) morning on New York's celebrated indie station, WBAI. From 6-7 a.m. I'll even talk to you: for my sins, it's a call-in show. We'll spend lots of time on the new novel, The Privilege of the Sword, and on the Riverside series in general in the second hour, easing into things slowly at 5 with some music from Thomas the Rhymer first.

Not in NYC? No problem! Jim sez:
As always, the program will be broadcast live to the NY metropolitan area over listener-sponsored WBAI, 99.5 FM, and streamed over the Internet at http://stream.wbai.org/ August 19, this Saturday morning (that's Friday night), from 5 till 7 AM. After broadcast, the show will be available as a stream from WBAI archives
(where, I might add, you can listen to shows featuring other illustrious past HoW guests).

* * * LATER THAT DAY (7:57 a.m., to be precise) * * *

Well! That was quite something. Had a good time with Jim, playing "Thomas the Rhymer" recordings (including the best one I've ever heard, from - of course - Ewan MacColl), reading from the novels and talking to folks who called in - including mad dog [livejournal.com profile] mnemex, who actually called from the plane on his way to Worldcon - we could hear the attendants saying, "Ladies & Gentlemen, we are cleared for takeoff..." in the background - and so will you if you follow Cat's advice (see below) on downloading the show as an MP3 file... The weird thing was going in there in the pitch darkness at 4:45, and emerging at 7 to discover the clear light of day streaming in (through an astonishing plate glass window with a glorious view of the EAst River! Who knew 'BAI had such terrific real estate?) - somehow I'd imagined everyone listening in darkness, too. Well, as I said above, 6-7 am not my usual stomping grounds. And so to bed.

I am on the wrong side of the coast, blast it. At least you will be here next August.

Since your book is ultimately responsible, I wanted to mention that there's now a puppy named Thomas the Rhymer. We're calling him Rhymer. I would think that this would be some offense fo Thomas except that the puppy really is a very clever with his paws, and I fancy that his bark is a bit musical, too. Here is a picture of him: http://wwww.petfinder.com/fotos/CA1050/CA1050.5923064-2-x.jpg

Yep - if Thomas were a dog, that's what he'd look like, all right! What a soulful yet elegant pooch. Health & happiness!

THE DOMINION OF THE SWORD

Cool - I didn't know you were so near NYC! (Otherwise, just wait for the archived version) It will be So Worth It, though: I'm bringing Martin Carthy's "The Dominion of the Sword" to play on-air right after I read - it's the song that inspired the book's title, and this will be the first time I've presented it in conjunction with the book - how cool is that?!

I'm in the wilds of Connecticut, so will rise (if not shine) in time to hear the show.

That is extra crispy cool!

Doh! My husband, keeper of maps and distances in our household, tells me that we are indeed too far from NYC to catch the broadcast. Alas, I shall have to sleep late and listen to the archives.

Will do fan-girl dance later in the day.

Hurray for the internet and online streaming! Now, if my ISP's dodgy broadband does not give out on me...

At least in Firefox for the Mac, you can download the show as a MP3 file so you can listen to it anytime. It's a fairly big file at 21 MB. Right now, it's playing on Odin, one of the Macs here --
great sound quality! -- Cat

Oooh. And it was a great show! I loved the Ewan MacColl song and the whole show made me very happy, although I was distracted momentarily by my Mom asking me who was speaking and what was going on. Hehe.

Heh. That was amusing -- and listening to the show from the time we got on line at the airport to check in(give or take 10 minutes) to the time they made us turn off our electronics was quite a trip!

So what on earth were you listening on at the airport, anyway??

My Rio Forge MP3 Player! It also doubles as a radio (and will even record radio to MP3, not that I've used that function -- or even the radio function until Saturday).
