LAcon was delightful - what I can remember of it. After 5 straight days of readings, signings & panels (not to mention an IAF mini-board meeting & party - and a trip to the Mouse!) I feel like I've been poleaxed, and am recovering by doing pretty much of nothing today at our guest house in Seattle. Delia & I are reading/signing Changeling and The Privilege of the Sword on Wednesday at University Books. If you can't come, but you want a book signed, the fabulous Duane at University Books says, "We take orders from all around the country. Send me [ duanewsfbks@lycos.com ] the orders." We'll leave some signed books with Duane for late orders - but if you want your copy personalized, better e-mail him your request by Weds. noon.

In other news: There will be a Russian translation of Thomas the Rhymer sometime this year! Published by Arda - does anyone know anything about them? This is also very cool because there is a Russian connection: the great Russian poet Lermontov believed he was a descendant of Thomas of Learmont.

The fellow in the middle of this picture -

http://coppervaleinternational.com/?page_id=31&wpshop_view_product=12&display=front

- is called Old Tom, more fully Thomas Learmont, from the STARCHILD series of comics and graphic novels starting in 1992.

I put him in the graphic novels because of YOUR book - so if you ever want some wall art, it's on me, with gratitude.

James

My jaw is on the floor - that is just stunning, stunning work! Now that I'm somewhere with really good wireless (which we're not getting a home these days), I'm checking out your new illo's on your LJ - zowie, friend. As St Vier said to Applethorpe, "Why have I not heard of you before?" (Probably because, as Richard Thompson says, "The world is a wonderful place.")

Our walls are dripping with art as is - with much more of it neatly stacked in portfolios under the bed - as we know far too many fine and generous artists . . . but I would like to call in that promise someday - meanwhile, what would it take to get a complete set of STARCHILD?

I am really honored that my work was an inspiration, and look forward to seeing more of yours.

A lot of fun stuff is in my lj galleries...

And I'm getting the "where did YOU come from?" thing a lot with DRAGONS... (lol)! It's mostly because I'd been in comics more than mainstream publishing. But it was a great training ground for DRAGONS (and the sequel I am finishing up right now).

A set of the ESSENTIAL STARCHILD books is the best - that's sort of the DVD edition. Everything in print in six paperbacks, in a decorative slipcase.

And for the person who got me interested in Thomas Learmont to begin with - I couldn't think of taking your money. Send me your address, and I'll get a set out to you before week's end.

Will do.

(Listen - one of these days I really am going to update the THOMAS pages on my website, with lots of links & historical & folkloric info - is there anything of yours that would be suitable to link to?)

We're looking at doing some new pages on some of the books, to note historical and literary influences. It wouldn't be a bad idea for me to put one together with that print and story excerpts that you could link to.

One of the premises of STARCHILD was that the Faerie Queen OFTEN took mortal lovers, and my story deals with their progeny: the Learmonts; the Van Winkles; and my protagonists, the remarkable Higgins family...

You and Orson Scott Card had a lot to do with influencing those comics... ;) (And now I'm ILLUSTRATING for Scott's online magazine... if you ever want to do something together, I'd clear things off my schedule to draw for you!)

Are you sure you're spelling them right? This Arcata, I mean. Perhaps Armada or Amphora? (Definitely not Azbooka, as I work with them and should know.)
I hope they'll use a very good unpublished translation of Thomas which was available for a few years, done by the same people who did JRRT and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Thank you for catching this! It is ARDA Publishers. I wil correct it above.

Do you know them? And might there be a tactful way for me to find out whether they know about this translation, or suggest it to them if they don't?

I never met them, but it looks like they should know those translators, Grigorieva and Grushetsky, as ARDA's published Charles Williams in their translations in late 90's. Perhaps the idea to take you on was originally suggested to ARDA by G&G. I'll try to talk to somebody from ARDA at the big Moscow bookfair next week — if my schedule isn't too tight and if the ones responsible for this project are at the stand.
