Some historical background for our new audio drama, The Witches of Lublin,  that served as the writers' springboard for creating our fictional story:

Women Klezmers:

"Despite the weight of Jewish custom against women playing music in public, daughters and wives played with their fathers and husbands and women performed on their own. Some of the more notable women were Khave Meyer from Dresden (1740-1742), Mariana Meyer from Dresden (performed with her father, 1739), Mariana from Halberstadt (1741), and Sofia from Halberstadt (1741)."

(And, yes, we named the character of Sofia after the real female klezmer Sofia from Haberstadt.)

Klezmers' persecution by Polish gentry:

"When my grandfather was a young man just after he got married, one Saturday night two elegantly dressed Polish noblemen came up to him and asked if he and his kapelye (Yid., ensemble) would play at their ball that very evening... Half the night had gone by while the kapelye played whent he two noblemen who brought them there said, 'We have been very pleased with your playing. What should we pay you with, gold or with chicken feces?' 'With gold', my grandfather said without any doubt in his voice. Suddenly, there was a strong assault upon them, it was dark and before they realized it they found themselves in a swamp in a forest. The violins were hanging in the trees while the violin cases were filled with chicken feces. It was very difficult for them to get the violins out of the trees. Then they barely dragged themselves home in their muddy condition."

Has everyone seen The Luttrell Psalter Film on YouTube?  Very useful and beautiful if you write (or read) pre-industrial fantasy/historical fiction with a rural setting . . . or just want pretty pictures of the English countryside, its flora & fauna.  A real sense of the textures of the land, and of the kind of work that went into sustaining people on it.

Oh, and there's a Luttrell Psalter Film website, explaining what they did, and why, and how!
ellenkushner: (Bordertown)
After 3 days of intense & furious editing of everyone else's Bordertown stories, I am now working on my own. My character is a grad student in cultural anthropology, who had the bright idea of going to B'town to do field work among the elves (or Truebloods, as they call themselves).  Ideally he'd go right into the Realm, but of course no human can pass the Border into there.  It is known that elves living in B'town themselves cannot speak of certain details about their home (in [livejournal.com profile] coffeeem  's wonderful new story, this is referred to as "the Silencing") - but my guy is sure a Trained Anthropologist can ask the questions right and get real answers.

He is, unfortunately, wrong.....

But never mind that for now.  My question:  What is his Research Topic for his thesis?  (I thought of "Kinship Systems amongst the Elves" - but then I'd have to write about Kinship systems, which was my least favorite class for the 2 yrs I did anthro as an undergrad).  And how long would be reasonable for him to take doing fieldwork before he was expected to write it?

Also:  this story takes place ca. 1998.  Was there a fashionable area of research then?  He's basically a fantasy geek who wants an excuse to go meet elves - but needs to impress his thesis advisor (so "kinship systems" would be hilariously apt, as it's dry as dust - but then I'd have to write about it - see above.)

UNMITIGATED RAPTURE!!!! not only did my dimwitted online researches & subsequent guesses prove to be unexpectedly right on, but our MD friends Eric & Elka just walked me through the entire accident, diagnosis, procedure & recovery so I can put the details right in my story. We did it on Skype, with lots of hand gestures. I am a Happy Writer.

Many readers will now hate me more than tongue can tell, as I proceed to torture Alec & Richard nearly to extinction. (The guy Alec is working on is but a Simple Villager, not Richard. Tho' E&E pointed out that it's also a lovely way to kill a man with a sword.)

mwa ha.

No, I'm not going to post the new scene* - but here's their description of how the medical bits work:
