You will, I feel sure, share in my disappointment that there is no band called MASTODON AGAINST ME! A copy of The Onion with an ad for an upcoming show at some sleazy venue or other has been lying on my bathroom floor (home of some truly great reading material) for days, now, and I've been very cheerful to think that someone has discovered the perfect band name. Imagine my disappointment when I finally read the actual ad and discovered that it was 2 groups, Mastodon and Against Me! Honestly. "Against Me!" - what a stupid name for a band. And "Mastodon" - how commonplace. Sigh. Where's the drama? The implicit narrative? "Mastodon Against Me" - now, that would have been something.

Against Me! started out as acoustic punk, which was kind of an interesting trick, if limited, but is now electric.

They have some very, very dedicated fans. Many of whom are VERY TALL.

I've seen them twice, although neither time with the actual intent to see THEM -- they were on the Fat Wreck tour in 2005, which I went to for the sake of the Soviettes and the Epoxies, and they opened for Alkaline Trio, whom I ADORE, on the Occult Roots tour in 2006.

Some of Against Me!'s songs are fairly listenable, though.

I've never heard anything by Mastodon.

You're so musically erudite. . . . Now I must check them out. In secret, of course.

Oh no, not nearly as erudite as I ought to be -- my knowledge is concentrated in a few separate subgenres of rock, and a bit of current Celtic. I retain an appreciation for classical and baroque from my childhood education, but have no way of knowing what recordings are the right ones to buy, and I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to jazz and blues.

You just happened to mention a band I've SEEN, is all. And their 1" pin, in company with others, adorns my purse flap -- a Swiss Army medkit, because I refuse to let go of the '80s.

Want me to yousendit a track or two?

Certainly - if only to find out what "yousendit" is!

I know nothing. But I can learn . . . .

A while ago, when the whitewashing of Earthsea was a recent scandal, I posted in a lot of fandom-of-color communities with a Portrait Maker self-portrait icon. I got so sick of seeing my (very pale) face I thought of a grunge band name: "Albuminous Redundancy."

It was, however, pointed out to me that it would be too hard to pronounce while drunk.

indeed...my thoughts exactly. :) (Or "zigackly," as Obelix says when squiffed. At least in English that's what he says.)

"Mastodon Against Me" -- I can imagine them sounding all angry like a creationist version of "Rage Against the Machine".

I would seriously buy every single album from a group called Mastodon Against Me. If only because of paleontological paranoia therein implied.

There's an art to band names. One must be careful with cute names, of course. Back in '89 I saw Jethro Tull in concert (a group with a funny story behind their name), and opening for them was: It Bites.

It did.

Oh, I agree! One of the THREE bands opening for Amber Pacific last September was called "Over It." By their second song, we WERE.
