Yes, it's been over a year since we moved, leaving our big old 4-square TV behind us in Boston 'cause we were going to get a nice new flatscreen to hang on the wall . . . but we're so intimidated by the technology & the choices! For a year we've been entertainig ourselves solely by means of DVD's on the laptop on the bed, propped up on an old legal folder box. Not a pretty sight.

We need a Shopping Buddy who Likes this Sort of Thing to go down to J&R (or somewhere) with us and help us pick one out. Or at least murmur words of encouragement & help us figure out where the hell we're going to put the VCR etc. in a pretty small space. Built-in speakers - Yes or No? The guy in the fancy TV store said they're crap, but the idea of kitting out a whole sound system to hang on the wall gives me the fantods. On the other hand (there always is one, isn't there?), this will be our only TV, and we're mostly going to use it to watch movies, so shouldn't we have decent sound? Or whaaaaat? I hate this. Thank you.

How are you going to be watching this TV? From the couch, curled up under a blanket, half-way dozing off, cat sprawled across your feet, bowl of popcorn precariously balanced on your hip

-or-

From the end of your theater style seat, knuckles white from gripping the arm rests, thumb worn game controller at your feet, and 10 bottles of Mt. Dew empty and forgotten around your chair?

I'm going to guess the first way, and I can assure you that built in speakers are fine.

I second that built in speakers are fine - and I would LOVE to take you twoz tech shopping - but I won't be in NYC til the 14th thru the 18th of Oct. If you still need me that far out - let me know.

I would superlove to do that with you - but I HOPE we'll be all Installed by then. If not, I'll give you a shout. What are you coming to NYC for?

And, hey, btw - we have the same birthday!! A few years apart, but still . . , Happpy Almost Birthday to Us!

For a show called Ethernet Expo at the Hilton on Ave of Amer. I do database management for tradeshows, so I go to them and set up the networks so that people can register and have their badges made.

And YES! Happy Birthday to US!

I would recommend the wireless speaker system. They use small antennas and are very easy to miss when hearing the great sound. The built-in type are adequate for spaces about 8'x 8' max. Sony makes some wonderful models.

Useful! Thanks. Our room is probably more like 10x12 - I'll ask Delia.

Yeah, well, I can say "shiny," too! What I want is some electronics savvy.

We still owe you some Birthday Chocolate Indulgence, don't we?

From: [identity profile] ktempest.livejournal.com
Yes on the chocolate :) But you've also been busy going all the way around the world and back.

I do have some technical expertise when it comes to electronic stuff. I can do a little research online so that when you go into the stores with Eugene, you can say "we are interested in these type models", which is generally helpful for not getting completely dicked around by sales people.

That would be truly wonderful. Schedules, yes! Are you free during weekdays, or what? Would love to do this soon. E-mail me at (myfullname) @ gmail to work stuff out.

Whenever I have to spend a thick wad of cash on electronics gear, I pop over to my local library and skim through Consumer Reports. They generally keep a year's worth on hand.

I don't know if your library does the same, and it certainly wouldn't be as cool as hitting the shop with [livejournal.com profile] jodi_davis, but it can un-intimidate the process.

It does for me, at least.

We just bought a fairly obscenely huge 50" plasma and I am completely unrepentant. I LOVE it.

From: [identity profile] ellen-kushner.livejournal.com
Yay! Unfortunately, our entire wall is probably like 50" - and we'll be sitting just a few feet from the screen - but we'll try for something equivalently sinful, given a NY apt.

Yeah, I limited myself to a 32" Sony because of being in a small living room. I used to sit on the floor in front of the tv but now I have to sit against the back wall or the picture doesn't look right. I could have probably gone up to 36", but I'm not complaining; this is quite the upgrade.

Of course, I also had to fit a large cable box, two other DVRs, a VCR, a receiver and a CD changer into the space.

And despite my long history with this stuff (I was the first person I knew who owned a VCR, back in the day), it's all way too complicated for me now. There was no way I could have installed this myself.

Good luck!

If you already have a stereo that you like, in the same room, you can wire the TV to use its speakers -- unless you want a dolby or THX surround sound system for making theaters obsolete. If you don't have a stereo but are thinking of getting one as well, again, you can benefit by thinking about combining them.

If you're ever back visiting Boston on a Second Sunday, drop by the tea dance -- it's been a long time. We're going around the world (virtually) this season, starting with Vienna in October.

This site has some comparisons:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Televisions/2001-6475_7-0.html

I can say that I bought a Samsung LCD about a year and a half ago (not a large one; I wanted it to fit on a certain shelf in the den). The picture quality is excellent.

You may want to consider dropping the VCR if you have limited space, and use a DVD player that you can also play music on. I have a Bose setup in the living room that works this way: a Bose CD/DVD player, along with a casette tape player and a phonograph -- because I'm retro that way -- with the small Bose speakers hung around the room. I painted the speakers to blend with the wall. All the sound goes through the one system.

I will note that there is sometimes a weird effect, by which words on TV may be slightly less easy to understand when they come through the speakers. When that happens, I turn down the volume on the Bose and turn up the volume on the TV itself. (There are also combinations of components where you can *only* hear through the speakers for certain things, but at this point, why complicate our lives by getting into that? But if you *do* get something like my system, make sure whoever sets it up for you knows you want the option of hearing sound just through the TV sometimes.)

I'm not back in NY yet -- but I've been shopping with my sister here in Baltimore for a new flat-panel TV as well as with a friend recently at J&R before I left. The bro and father recommended Vizio for quality and price (bargain prices; I couldn't tell any difference in picture quality between the Vizio sets and Panasonic when seen side by side, but CNET reviews say Vizio isn't quite as good as the plasma sets). Mentioning this because J&R's selection wasn't large and it doesn't carry the brand.

I apologise for the tangential nature of this comment, but since The Privilege of the Sword has occupied pretty much every free moment of the past couple of days I just wanted to give you a wee verbal bouquet by way of thanks. I've loved 'Swordspoint' since I read it aged 17, and happening across The Fall of Kings last year was absolutely delightful - but I confess that I missed the characters from Swordspoint while reading TFoK. Thus TPotS was a wholly unexpected delight when I stumbled across it in a bookshop here in Bangkok. (Indeed, when we had 'Show and Tell' [I'm a teacher] I told my kids about my glee at having happened across it in the bookshop the day before, and that I'd been up late reading it, and had been late to school because of reading it during breakfast. Today, as I was nearing the end of the book, I had to fight a mighty temptation to sit and read it in my class and DID spend my lunchbreak and my non-contact time glued to the pages, rather than doing any of the marking/planning/prep work that I should have been doing in that time. And now I'm off home to reread SP and TFotK once again. Not neccesarily in that order.

Bless you. I'm so very glad that you wrote this book.

What an absolutely wonderful comment to wake up to! (And here I thought it was just going to be someone else telling me I needed to figure out where to fit a stereo in my room...) Thanks for the glimpse into your life - it's a real treat to imagine you reading TPTS that way.

As for the fish . . . ah!! I actually brought some orange foil-wrapped chocolate fish to my reading at Nippon Con in Yokohama last month just so I could deliver that line - but nobody got it! Alas. If only you had been there.

It would be a shame to ruin the experience of a nice big plasma with built in speakers. If you have an existing stereo system you can use that to amplify your sound. Better yet, go buy a surround sound system with front, center and back speakers. While there is no limit to how much you can spend, you can get a very nice set up for under 1k. When you watch movies in surround you will notice the difference immediately vs. 2 built in speakers. Just go to Harvey Electronics in ABC on Broadway and 19th St. to see what I mean (don't buy there though). Also I wouldn't recommend buying any electronics in a store since you can do much better in price ordering over the net. Also if you do your research on the net and have a specific model in mind, be careful when you ask to be shown that one in the store. Often they will show a model that has an extra letter at the end with out pointing this out to you. So you think you are looking at the model you saw on the net and this one is so much cheaper but they fail to tell you its not the same item. This is a common scam which they won't tell you about unless you ask. Feel free to email if you have any questions. bmgmailbox-politics@yahoo.com

Ellen and Delia,

Call Kaluta. He absolutely knows his electronic gadgets and would be a perfect guide on such a sopping spree.

Karen and I are getting up to speed for a trip over to London on Sunday to attend the UK premier of Stardust. With a short side trip built in to have dinner with the Chagford mafia.

See you the next weekend at FaerieCon!

Best,
Charles

Hi Cousin dear:
I just stopped by to see the latest and was enthralled by a new word:
"fantods". Had to go look it up immediately.
I need to add that to my vocabulary asap.
Hope you are recovered from your latest trip.
Will we see you anytime soon?

Hi, Sweetness! Great to hear from you. Sadly, we will not be in the Land of the Cleves anytime soon - too many out of town dates for GOLDEN DREYDL etc. coming up, we're going to need that weekend to recover! So you'll have to come to NYC to see me . . . but I think the idea is not too horrible for you, eh? That is to say, I hope the idea of a trip to Manhattan doesn't give you THE FANTODS!

We are just beginning to be over the Japan jet lag, thanks for asking. It was such a terrific trip - we'll make you look at all our pictures...whenever we finally do get to see you. Meanwhile, thanks for the link to your new blog - it's wonderful!
