wintersweet kindly (hmm, why did I just type kingly?) sent me links to the Amazon Japan page with better quality images, and also to "books by Eren Kashunaa" which includes the new Japanese TPOTS and Swordspoint covers - by a very different artist... I'll rely on those more conversant with the contemporary Japanese aesthetic to decode them for me.
P.S. Oh, boy! I just had Google translate their copy for Swordspoint, which includes this: 'formidable権謀術数involved in the thick of the young fencer長篇world classics, Japan's first translation of Customs gem 3 Stories "Death was not named Samurai" . . . '

Date: 2008-09-10 02:04 am (UTC)I clicked on a few "what other people bought" (or at least I think that's what it was) covers on the Amazon.jp site and had a laugh seeing the Anime/Manga-style versions for books by Gene Wolfe and Bujold--and John Scalzi! Heheheh. At least the aesthetic is a tad closer to say, Canty's coverart than almost anything that gets put on a US SF cover...!

Those familiar with Japanese culture may be entertained to hear that the actual word used to describe Alec is "bishounen", and that the title of the first short story is in fact "The Swordsman Whose Name Was Not Shinigami." (I'm sorry to say it doesn't actually say samurai, alas!) And just as trivia, the word for city, 都, can also be translated as "capital" and is part of the name Kyoto (京都). :)

But maybe I've just been pronouncing it wrong myself. ;-) And I occasionally misread Kashunaa as "Kahuna," which makes you somehow more mighty. But I occasionally got questioned for spelling my first name "eren" even though that's much closer to the pronunciation than "erin" would be.
